On Sunday, June 11, 2PM at St.
Marks Church (10th Street at Second Avenue),
our composer and stage pianist John Stone presents a
diverse program combining compositions in Early Classical
as well as Early Jazz styles. The first half includes
songs in Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque styles with
settings of period poems in French, Italian, German
and English languages. Jolle Greenleaf, hailed
as a golden soprano (The New York Times)
and soprano Amaranta Viera will lead a consort
of viols (Marie Dalby, Jay Elfenbein,
Motomi Igarashi and John Mark Rozendaal)
and lute/theorbo (Dan Swenberg) in hauntingly
beautiful solos and duets. The second half switches
moods and genres, featuring John at the piano playing
his original rags, waltzes, and miniatures (including
several tunes for the Paper Bag Players) in the vein
of 1920s and 30s cabaret and theater music. Choreographer
Ariane Anthony will reprise a dance from an earlier
collaboration with Stone, as well as premiere a new
dance solo. Prof. Mitch Miller of Vassar College has
called the program Heartbreakingly exhilarating
music of utterly arresting beauty and Jennifer
Dunning of The New York Times writes, Invaluable
just the right blend of evocative melody and nutty dissonances.
